Portsmouth artificial grass

Artificial grass Portsmouth

On Portsea Island, a rear yard or side return can be the whole garden. Dan installs artificial grass in Portsmouth from Sholing, Southampton, travelling up to 30 miles and planning the surface around the space available.

A courtyard lawn, not a miniature playing field

Across Portsmouth, 43.4% of homes were terraced at Census 2021. That makes courtyard gardens, rear yards and side returns an important starting point for lawn planning. Measure the space left after doors, bins, seating and the route to the back gate have been allowed for, rather than covering every available corner with grass.

Most of this Hampshire port city lies on Portsea Island in the Solent. A small outdoor space can still combine a green surface with paving and planting. Artificial grass is an option where a living lawn struggles for light or regular use, but it is not maintenance-free. The artificial grass page explains the installation.

Can the base materials reach the yard?

A terraced layout makes access worth checking before a product is chosen. If your property has no usable side route, spoil and stone may need to pass through the house. That is a question about your particular home, not an assumption that every terrace has the same access.

Send photos of doorways, turns and the route into the yard. Firm edging, the depth of the supporting layers and the level beside the back door all need planning. A small area can still involve substantial preparation; choosing a thinner-looking grass does not remove that work.

Low-lying island, careful water route

Portsmouth is low-lying, with the Southsea seafront on its coastal edge. This does not establish the soil or flood risk in an individual garden. Report standing water and show where rain currently goes. A permeable grass backing cannot solve a drainage problem if the underlying ground has nowhere to send water.

A compacted, free-draining stone base and secure perimeter support the surface. The build-up must fit the existing paving and thresholds without creating a trip at the join. Any planting retained in an exposed Southsea or Eastney garden should also be chosen with salt-laden wind in mind.

Cleaning beside paving with hard water

Portsmouth Water supplies the city. Its supply zones are classed hard or very hard, at 279–315 mg/l calcium carbonate. When rinsing artificial grass or adjoining paving, mineral deposits can leave lime marks as water dries. Use care methods appropriate to the paving and grass, rather than applying aggressive descaling products across both.

For pets, collect waste promptly and plan suitable drainage for cleaning. Check the surface temperature in strong sunshine before dogs or bare feet use it. The artificial grass for dogs guide covers these choices.

Permission and the rest of your garden

Across Portsmouth, 28.6% of homes were privately rented at Census 2021. If you rent, agree a permanent lawn change with the landlord before arranging work. Conservation designations such as The Terraces and Owen’s Southsea are also relevant if the project includes alterations to a front boundary; check the proposal with Portsmouth City Council rather than assuming a rear-lawn decision covers it.

If paving or fencing needs attention too, see the Portsmouth landscaping page. To discuss access and your garden layout, contact Dan or call 07841 510110.

Frequently asked questions

Will a stone base stop puddles in a Portsea Island yard?

Not necessarily. Being on a low-lying island does not identify your garden’s soil or water route. Existing puddles and drainage must be assessed before the base is agreed.

What should I consider when rinsing grass beside my patio?

Portsmouth Water’s supply zones are hard or very hard. Water drying on paving can leave lime marks; follow care guidance for both surfaces and avoid unsuitable cleaning chemicals.

Can I replace a rented courtyard lawn?

Agree any permanent change with the landlord first. A tenancy does not automatically allow excavation or a replacement lawn.

How much of a narrow yard should be grass?

Allow for door openings, bins, seating and the access route first. A smaller grass area beside practical paving may work better than covering the whole yard.
