Working in Portsmouth from Southampton

Daniel John Landscapes is based at 5 Gladstone Road in Sholing, on the eastern side of Southampton. Portsmouth sits comfortably within our 30-mile working radius, reached along the M27, so the city is one of the six main areas we cover alongside Southampton, Eastleigh, Romsey, Winchester and the New Forest.

Making the most of compact city gardens

Much of Portsmouth is densely built, and many homes, particularly the terraces of Portsea Island, have narrow or compact back gardens. In a small space every decision counts. A well-laid patio can make a courtyard feel larger and more usable, especially with large-format slabs and fewer joints. Artificial grass can give a green, low-maintenance finish in a yard where a real lawn would struggle for light.

Small gardens also benefit from clever detailing: raised planters to bring greenery up to eye level, built-in seating that doubles as storage, and fence screens to hide bins.

Access in terraced streets

Many terraced houses have no side access, which means materials and waste have to come through the house. We plan for this from the start: protecting floors and doorways, working out how slabs, stone and spoil will be moved, and keeping the route clean at the end of each day. Parking and space for deliveries are also considered before work begins.

Fencing near the coast

Portsmouth is surrounded by water and exposed to strong winds off the Solent. Fences in exposed spots take a lot of load, so posts need setting properly and panels need to suit the conditions. Gravel boards keep timber clear of the ground and help it last. Our fencing page explains how we approach new fences and replacements.

Larger gardens across the city

Not every Portsmouth garden is small. Further from the centre, family homes often have longer plots that suit a full garden renovation: a patio near the house, a new lawn, fresh boundaries and perhaps a pergola or covered seating area at the far end. Planning the garden as a whole lets everything be built in the right order by one team.

Planning a garden near the sea

Gardens close to the coast can face salty air, strong gusts and, in some areas, sandy or free-draining soil. These conditions influence material choices. Porcelain and well-laid natural stone cope well with exposure, while timber structures need solid fixings and regular care. Raised beds and screened seating can create sheltered corners where plants and people are protected from the worst of the wind.

Choosing finishes that suit the conditions from the outset is far easier than replacing materials that were not up to the job.

Bringing several jobs together

Many Portsmouth projects combine more than one service. A typical small garden might need the old paving lifted, a new patio laid, a fence replaced and a strip of artificial grass added. Doing all of this in one visit, in the right order, keeps disruption to a minimum, which matters when everything has to come through the house.
