Turning a patio into an outdoor room

A patio gives you somewhere to sit. A pergola turns it into a space. By framing an area overhead, a pergola creates a sense of enclosure, offers dappled shade on bright days and gives climbing plants something to grow over. With lighting, it becomes somewhere to spend summer evenings.

Pergolas and outdoor living spaces are both services Daniel John Landscapes provides. Daniel holds NVQ Level 1 and 2 qualifications in carpentry, which is valuable when building timber structures that need to be square, strong and well finished.

Timber pergolas built to fit

Every pergola is sized around the space it covers. Post positions are chosen so they do not get in the way of a table or a path, and the height is set to feel generous without overpowering the house or garden. Posts are fixed securely, either set into the ground or anchored to a solid base, so the structure stays rigid in strong winds.

Our projects gallery shows several finished timber structures, including a pergola with a slatted roof over a lounge and dining area and a pergola standing at the end of a new lawn.

Covered seating, canopies and gazebos

If you want shelter from light rain as well as sun, a covered structure may suit you better than an open pergola. Options range from slatted roofs that filter light, to solid-roofed gazebos and modern canopies over the back of the house. Our gallery includes a timber gazebo on a porcelain base and a contemporary canopy over a large patio.

Outdoor living and entertaining spaces

Outdoor living is about how a garden is used rather than one single feature. It might mean a dining area close to the kitchen, a lounge corner under cover, a built-in seat, or a dedicated entertaining space with a bar and fireplace like the one shown in our gallery. Combining a pergola with a patio, lighting and planting creates a space that feels like an extension of the house.

Pergola or gazebo: which suits your garden?

The main difference is the roof. A pergola has an open, slatted top that filters sunlight into dappled shade and lets climbers grow across it, while a gazebo has a solid roof that keeps off rain as well as sun. Pergolas are often fixed to the house or set over a patio, framing an area without enclosing it; gazebos are usually freestanding and can sit anywhere in the garden as a separate shelter. If you mainly want relief from bright afternoon sun and a space that still feels open, a pergola usually suits. If you want to sit out through showers, a covered roof makes more sense. Our guide to pergola cost explains how roof choices affect the price.

Planning permission for pergolas

Many garden pergolas fall within permitted development, which means planning permission is not needed. However, the rules depend on factors such as height, how close the structure is to a boundary, how much of the garden it covers and whether your home is listed or in a conservation area. If in doubt, check with your local council or the government's Planning Portal before work begins. Daniel can point out any aspects of your design that are worth checking.

Part of a bigger plan

Pergolas are often built as part of a full garden renovation, after the paving and before the lawn. We cover Southampton, Eastleigh, Romsey, Winchester, Portsmouth and the New Forest from our base in Sholing.

Timber, finishes and lifespan

Timber pergolas are usually built from treated softwood, which can be left to weather naturally or finished with a stain or paint to match fences, decking or the house. Regular checks of fixings and a fresh coat of treatment every few years help the structure last. Keeping climbing plants trimmed stops excessive weight building up on the beams.

Lighting, planting and comfort

Small additions can make a pergola far more useful. Festoon or low-voltage lighting lets you use the space after dark. Climbers such as wisteria, clematis, roses or grapevines soften the timber and add scent and shade as they mature. Outdoor curtains, screens or slatted side panels give privacy from neighbouring windows and shelter from the wind.

Thinking about these details at the design stage means power can be planned in and posts positioned where they will support screens or planting later.

Positioning a pergola well

Where a pergola sits matters as much as how it is built. Watching how the sun moves across the garden through the day helps decide whether it should catch evening light or provide shade at midday. Views from the house, privacy from neighbours and the route people take through the garden are all worth considering.

Frequently asked questions

Will my pergola need planning approval?

Often not, as many pergolas fall within permitted development. Height, distance from boundaries, the area covered and whether the property is listed or in a conservation area all matter, so check with your local council or the Planning Portal if unsure.

Can posts be fixed into paving that is already laid?

Often, yes, provided the patio and its base are solid enough to anchor the posts. Daniel will check this on site.

Is a pergola or a gazebo better for shade?

For gentle, dappled shade a slatted pergola works well, especially once climbers grow over it. For full shade and shelter from rain, a gazebo or a pergola with a solid covering is the better option.

What is the difference between a pergola and a gazebo?

A pergola usually has an open or slatted roof, while a gazebo has a solid roof that offers more shelter from rain.

Can you build an outdoor bar or entertaining area?

Outdoor living spaces are one of our services. Our projects gallery shows a covered outdoor bar and fireplace as an example of what is possible.
