Decking

Decking for Southampton gardens

A deck needs more than a choice of boards. Its position, supporting frame, ventilation and connection to the house decide whether the finished space works.

When decking makes sense

Decking can provide a sitting area where a timber finish suits the garden, or help connect a door with another part of the plot. Start by comparing it with paving rather than assuming it is the simplest answer to uneven ground. The height, access underneath and route across the garden all affect the choice. Daniel John Landscapes has a real timber decking and steps photograph on the projects page; it is not evidence of completed composite decking jobs.

The frame is part of the specification

Boards are the visible finish, but the frame supports the load and fixes their position. Joist spacing, timber suitability, support points and connections need to suit the chosen decking system and its intended use. A raised deck also needs thought about stairs, edge protection and the space below. A quote should describe these parts, not just the area covered by boards. Existing supports should be checked before anyone proposes to reuse them.

Timber and composite are different decisions

Timber decking has a natural grain and can be maintained with suitable cleaning and finishes. Composite boards are manufactured products, with their own requirements for expansion gaps, clips and support spacing. Some contain wood fibres and plastic; product specifications vary. Compare the manufacturer's installation and care instructions rather than treating all composites as interchangeable. Composite decking installation can be discussed generally, but availability and the exact product would need confirming with Daniel before it is included in a quote.

Keep moisture moving and air circulating

A deck should not trap wet debris against the house or leave timber sitting in persistent damp. Ground below, gaps between boards and ventilation around the frame deserve attention before the surface goes on. Avoid covering drains, air bricks or inspection points. Planting and gravel beside the deck should not block airflow or hold soil against the supports. Cleaning leaves out of gaps is part of routine care, whatever material is chosen.

Steps, edges and the route into the garden

Think through how people will leave the deck as well as how they arrive. Steps need a consistent, usable arrangement, and changes of level should be obvious. A deck beside a patio should meet it without creating an awkward trip point. Where a pergola is proposed, its supports and fixings need their own consideration; boards alone are not a suitable structural foundation. Plan those connections before either feature is finished.

Planning checks for a raised platform

Raising the sitting area can affect privacy and overlook neighbours. Planning rules may apply to decking, particularly raised platforms or properties with restrictions on permitted development. Check the current advice from the Planning Portal and your local council rather than assuming every garden deck is exempt. Structural safety, guardrails and the condition of the house where anything is attached also need checking. An existing patio or deck does not establish permission for a larger replacement.

What changes a decking quote

Decking cost is shaped by the board specification, framework, height, ground preparation, access and finishing details. Steps, rails, awkward cuts and removing an old structure add work. Product delivery and disposal also need to be clear. Ask how the space beneath will be left and which treatments or fixings are included. Comparing only the price of boards misses much of the actual installation, especially where the supporting structure is substantial.

Discuss the deck within the whole garden

Decking may be one element of a garden renovation, with paving or lawn around it. Agree the levels and construction order so new surfaces do not have to be lifted for later supports. Daniel is based in Sholing and works around Southampton and Hampshire within about 30 miles. Use the enquiry form to describe the intended location, approximate size and any raised edges; the specific service and materials can then be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Can gravel boards be used around decking?

Gravel boards may be suitable as a separate edging detail, but they are not automatically suitable deck supports or retaining structures. Keep ventilation clear and use components rated for their intended purpose.

Can landscapers build decks?

Deck construction can form part of landscaping, but the installer must understand the frame, fixings and safety requirements. Daniel's existing project gallery shows timber decking; discuss your proposed structure and materials before agreeing the work.

What affects decking cost?

Board choice is only one factor. Ground conditions, frame construction, height, stairs, edge protection, access and removal of an old deck can change the quote substantially.
