Romsey garden boundaries

Fencing Romsey

Romsey’s Conservation Area makes a front boundary a different decision from a private rear fence. Dan fits and repairs fencing in Romsey, a town on the River Test in Hampshire’s Test Valley district, working from his Sholing base.

Start with the Conservation Area boundary

Romsey Conservation Area was designated in 1970, extended in 1983 and reviewed in 2020. For a front-garden or boundary alteration within it, check whether consent is needed before dismantling or ordering replacements. The relevant planning authority is Test Valley Borough Council, not a New Forest authority.

The setting includes Romsey Abbey, Hampshire’s largest parish church, and Market Place with its Palmerston statue. A fence beside an older property should be considered with the existing frontage, without claiming every house in the town has the same style or restrictions.

Near the Forest, but in Test Valley

Romsey is seven miles north-west of Southampton and just over three miles from the New Forest. That proximity can inform a choice of materials or hedging that fits the setting, but it does not place the town in New Forest district or establish forest-edge exposure at your garden.

The main fencing page explains panels, closeboard, picket and screens. A low front treatment and a private rear run can have different purposes. Consider views, planting and any gateway before deciding that all sides need the same height or material.

Long-term upkeep without assuming the garden

Across Test Valley, 68.9% of homes were owner-occupied at Census 2021, and 37.6% were detached. Those district-wide figures are context for longer-term boundary choices, not Romsey-only statistics or a prediction of your plot size.

If you want the boundary to serve for the longer term, allow access for maintenance and discuss timber or concrete posts before selecting the panels. Gravel boards keep timber away from direct soil contact. Neither ordinary panels nor gravel boards should be expected to retain raised ground on the other side.

The River Test is context, not a soil diagnosis

The town stands on the River Test, known for trout and fly-fishing; the Andover Canal of 1794 also ran through Romsey. These are reasons to describe the actual site carefully, not to assign wet ground or a particular soil to every address.

Posts need support suited to the conditions found and the fence height. If a run leans, photograph the supports as well as the broken boards. Our fence repairs page explains why sound sections may stay, while failing posts can change the scope. Keep clear of anything unstable.

Agree the line and the work sequence

Check boundary responsibility and speak to your neighbour if access or a shared line is involved. Show any planting, walls or paving you want protected. A material choice should follow a clear line and purpose, rather than conceal an unresolved boundary question.

If a patio or wider garden change is planned, boundary excavation often belongs earlier in the sequence. See our Romsey landscaping page for broader options. Dan works up to 30 miles from Sholing, Southampton; to discuss a Romsey fence, send your details or call 07841 510110.

Frequently asked questions

Which council should I contact about a Conservation Area front fence?

Test Valley Borough Council. Romsey is in Test Valley district, and a proposed alteration in Romsey Conservation Area may need consent.

Does being near the New Forest make my boundary a National Park job?

Not by itself. Romsey is in Test Valley; check the actual property and proposed work rather than inferring restrictions from proximity.

Should a front fence and rear fence match exactly?

Not necessarily. A front edge, gateway and private rear run can serve different purposes, provided the treatment suits the property and any restrictions.

Does the River Test tell you whether my posts stand in wet soil?

No. The actual post positions and any damp or movement need checking. The river’s presence does not establish conditions in every garden.
