New Forest garden landscaping

Landscapers in the New Forest

The New Forest is not a single town but an area of unenclosed pasture, heath and forest in south-west Hampshire, proclaimed a royal forest by William the Conqueror and a National Park since 1 March 2005. Dan offers landscaping, fencing and artificial grass across the Forest within 30 miles of his base in Sholing, Southampton.

Inside the National Park or outside it?

Not all of New Forest District lies within the National Park, and that affects who you ask about planning. Inside the park, the New Forest National Park Authority is the planning authority. Outside it, in places such as Totton, the Waterside, Lymington, Ringwood and Fordingbridge, New Forest District Council takes that role.

Statutory limits on enclosure and planning controls introduced in 1992 mean that inside the park most homes are older village houses, with limited new building. Conservation areas include Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Burley, Beaulieu and Swan Green, and outside the park, Lymington, Eling and Hythe. Front boundaries, hard-standing and outbuildings in these places may need consent, so check with the relevant authority before work starts. The areas page shows Dan's wider coverage.

Keeping ponies and cattle out of the garden

Commoners' ponies and cattle roam freely through Forest villages, and it is up to householders to keep them out of their gardens. That makes a stock-proof boundary and a gate that closes behind you practical needs rather than finishing touches. A boundary here has to resist a leaning animal as well as mark the line.

Dan's fencing service covers panels, closeboard, picket and screens, and garden gates can be planned alongside the fence so the weakest point is not the entrance. The Totton fencing page looks at boundaries on the district side of the Forest edge.

Poor soils, wet heath and what goes underneath

Poor soils are the reason much of the cleared land became heath, and the Forest is the largest contiguous area of unsown vegetation in lowland Britain. It is drained by the Lymington River, Beaulieu River and Avon Water, with valley bogs and wet heath in between. Conditions vary garden to garden, but in low-lying plots drainage and preparation deserve attention first.

For a patio, that means a compacted sub-base and falls that move water away from the house. For artificial grass, the base and drainage route matter as much as the surface, and new turf needs properly prepared soil to establish. Describe any standing water when you enquire so it can be assessed rather than assumed.

Larger plots and full garden schemes

Across New Forest District, 45.4% of homes were detached at Census 2021, with 24.1% semi-detached, 15.3% terraced and 13.7% flats; 74.2% were owner-occupied. Those are district-wide figures, not a description of any one village, but they explain why many enquiries involve larger plots suited to a planned garden renovation.

On a bigger plot, sequence matters: access routes, excavation and boundaries come before vulnerable finishes such as paving or turf, and work can be staged. To talk through your garden, send photos and your postcode via the contact page or call 07841 510110.

Frequently asked questions

Who handles planning for my New Forest garden?

Inside the National Park, the New Forest National Park Authority. Outside it, for example in Totton, Lymington or Ringwood, New Forest District Council.

Do I need consent for a new front boundary in Lyndhurst or Burley?

Possibly. Both are conservation areas within the National Park, so check front boundaries, hard-standing and outbuildings with the National Park Authority before work begins.

Can you fence a garden to keep Forest ponies out?

Yes. Commoners' ponies and cattle roam the villages, so Dan can discuss stock-proof fencing and gates that close reliably behind you.

Will wet ground affect a new lawn or artificial grass?

It can. Parts of the Forest have wet heath and poor soils, so drainage and base preparation are checked before choosing turf or artificial grass.
